This is Falk’s first appearance as Columbo, so he’s still finding the role and as a result this is a faster-talking, less outwardly bumbling version of the LAPD detective. Nevertheless, the good Lieutenant, upon hearing that Ferris was a meticulous note-keeper and researcher for his Mrs Melville books, he goes back to the dead authors office and discovers the key piece of evidence that Cassidy forgot. The two writers then arrive at the cabin, where Cassidy shoots Ferris then drives the body back to his house and leaves it on the lawn, which is classy.Īll looks good for the talentless hack, but his insurance-fuelled debauchery is interrupted by La Sanka, who, hearing of the death, puts two and two together and initiates a blackmail plot that leaves her bludgeoned to death and at the bottom of a lake in an apparent boating accident, though I’ve never seen a boat beat someone over the head with a poor-quality trinket.Ĭolumbo isn’t buying any of this shit, and his suspicions aren’t eased by the fact that Cassidy treats Columbo like a bozo in another proto-trope for the show. On his way up to the cabin, Cassidy stops at the local store where owner Lilly La Sanka (Barbara Colby) spots Ferris sat in the car whilst Cassidy is on the phone. He convinces Ferris to take a trip up to his garish cabin, before planting evidence in Ferris’ office that his colleague was applying his artistic self-esteem to an investigation of the local underworld. When Ferris decides that he’s had enough ripping off Agatha Christie and wants to write more serious-minded tat, Cassidy decided to cash-in on the insurance policy they took out on each other. He’s a slimy tosser, and frequently matches a turtleneck with a sports coat, so his first crime is against fashion. The actual writing is done by Ferris, whilst Cassidy does all the publicity. Ken Franklin (Cassidy) and Jim Ferris (Martin Milner) are mystery novel partners on the incredibly successful Mrs Melville Mysteries, which are Jane Marple knock-offs (or maybe the first inkling of an idea for Murder She Wrote, also created by Levinson & Link) and spectacularly popular.
